RIP World Rally Champion Bjorn Waldegaard

Our condolences to the family and friends of Swedish rally driver Bjorn Waldegaard, who has passed away at the age of 70. The Swedish star started competing at the age of 19, winning national titles, and the first World Rally Championship in 1979, as well as becoming the oldest ever driver to win a WRC event at the age of 46 with victory in the 1990 Safari Rally.

If that wasn’t enough, he was still winning events in his 60s, with victory at the 2011 East African Safari Classic in a Porsche 911 at the age of 68. Over the course of his long career, he drove many legendary cars to wins, including the Lancia Stratos HF in a memorable San Remo Rally win, the Ford Escort RS1800 which saw him begin his series of successes in African rallies, and the Toyota Celica 2000 GT, Twincam Turbo and GT-Four ST165.
